Chunmari Soosla / Churmuri Uppittu / Tempered Puffed Rice - Yummy and filling breakfast

Yum.... Chunmari Soosla... 😋😋😋

Yes, I agree!! It has been too long since I last posted anything for you. I thank you for the love, the fact that this channel and blog matters to you and that you waited for me to put something up.

All of last year has been extremely tough. It was one of those terrible times that we have only read of in science fiction novels and seen in movies like I am legend or Contagion. It was one of those times, that when you refer to popular lore of India, you'll notice that the Lord finally takes an Avatar and comes down to cleanse the world. I hope He has and I hope he cleanses the world of its impurities - like a spiritual RO process. :)))

Anyway, whatever it was, that last year, it has passed and I am thankful to have survived it with an attitude of gratitude.

"Hope is a good breakfast, but it is a bad supper." - Francis Bacon.

When I was young, I wondered what Bacon meant when he said these words. I mean, morning, noon or night - any time of the day should be a time for HOPE, right? Umm... May be that's just me, but I'd like my life's compass to point to HOPE when I might not be finding it within. Last year, a lot of things happened and at this point, I might not be ready to launch into a trip down memory lane. Perhaps, another time. Let's HOPE I am comfortable talking about it many months later.

Moving on... It's a brand new year and for those of you who have survived the Pandemic on your own cooking.... my sincere apologies. :))))

Jokes apart!! I hope everybody is safe and healthy. Today is Sankranti, so go ahead and pig away on Kharada Huggi, gojju, sihi huggi, kosambri, etc. Eat well and exercise well. I think I'll have to mandatorily add the, 'Sanitise regularly and Stay 6 feet away from each other' to my messages from now on. But do so without me or anyone repeating it, please! Okay, so, today we're having Chunmari Soosla. Sounds funny, doesn't it? Well, it may sound funny, but it tastes like some seriously yummy breakfast. Chunmari, as we call it in Uttara Karnataka, is puffed rice. In Mangalore area, this is referred to as Mandakki. Here, in Bangalore, we call it Kadlepuri (colloquial: Kallepuri) or Churmuri. Call it anyway you want, but treat it well. This recipe is a regular breakfast / evening snack item in North Karnataka as it is very simple to make. I've added a few raw veggies as toppings, but you could do with just the basic sauce of it and add on some sev, bjuhiya or other condiments like khara boondi or Bombay mixture.

The point to note here is that soosla is the recipe where puffed rice is usually washed in water, squeezed and added to the sauce. In bhel, which is a popular snack across India and a beach side delight in coastal towns and cities, the puffed rice is added directly to the mixing bowl, along with some spicy mint and red chutney, chopped raw onions, tomatoes, chillies, green mango bits, coriander leaves, salt, chat masala and mixed well. In North Karnataka, there is another version of this that is a lot more spicy and tangy. We call it Girmitt. It is served with fried green chillies that are to be eaten with the mix and I tell you... it will set your insides on fire! :D What can we say? We love our fiery foods.

I'll add that recipe on another day. For now, enjoy this video, try during the weekend and let me know how you liked it. Okay?
